Microsoft has offered voluntary exit packages to roughly 60,000 employees across India, the US, the UK and Canada, with eligible staff in India reportedly facing a December 1, 2026 deadline to decide. The programme, announced October 26, 2026, targets selected teams at internal job level 70 or below — and it lands while the company plans about $175 billion in capital expenditure for calendar year 2026, much of it for AI infrastructure.

The scheme touches headcount planning in four countries at once. Microsoft employed approximately 223,000 full-time workers worldwide as of June 30, 2026, including around 23,000 in India. How many Indian employees can actually opt in hasn't been confirmed.

What did Microsoft announce?

Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) in a message to employees. She said the initiative would provide another option for people considering opportunities outside the company while letting participating business units adjust their workforces to changing requirements.

Coleman described the programme as a new approach giving employees more flexibility while helping teams respond to shifting business needs. She added that Microsoft would keep supporting skill development and internal career opportunities where appropriate.

The company hasn't disclosed how many employees it expects to accept. Nor has it confirmed that taking the offer is a prerequisite for avoiding future layoffs.

Who is eligible?

The programme covers employees at internal job level 70 and below in participating organisations across the four countries. Not everyone at those levels qualifies — participation depends on the business unit, its priorities, customer commitments and workforce needs.

Some marketing, sales, engineering and corporate teams are reportedly excluded. Eligible employees are being contacted individually with their offer details.

The scheme is voluntary throughout: employees decide whether to accept, and Microsoft has set no target for the number of departures.

How much severance is on the table?

A Business Insider report detailing the proposed packages shows financial terms varying by job level and length of service:

  • Level 64 and below: one week's base pay for every six months of service, capped at 39 weeks
  • Levels 65–67: two weeks' base pay for every six months of service, capped at 39 weeks
  • Level 68: a package equivalent to 12 months of salary

These are reported terms, not a guarantee of individual payouts. Microsoft has said final terms should be confirmed through each employee's individual offer.

Level 67-and-below employees may also continue regular stock vesting for six or 12 months, depending on service, according to the report. Health insurance and other benefits will depend on the applicable package and location.

What's the deadline?

Eligible employees in India reportedly have until December 1, 2026, to decide. Other accounts describe the cutoff more generally as early December, so HR teams and employees should follow the date in each individual communication. Participating employees are expected to leave Microsoft at the end of December.

Why now?

The programme follows heavy AI infrastructure spending — data centres and computing capacity — alongside earlier workforce reductions. Microsoft cut approximately 4,800 roles in July as it reorganised parts of its business, including gaming operations. Earlier in 2026, it also launched a voluntary retirement programme for eligible US employees.

Voluntary exit schemes can trim future salary and operating costs while giving employees financial support for transitions. For India's roughly 23,000 Microsoft employees, the open question is how many positions and business units are included — a number Microsoft hasn't confirmed.

With the December 1 decision deadline and end-of-December departures, eligible employees and their managers have weeks, not months, to weigh severance math against stock vesting, benefits continuation and career plans.
