Every employee at World Star Holding walked away with a new iPhone after the United Arab Emirates firm ran a mystery-box game in which some staff initially found only chocolate inside their boxes.
A video of the event, shared online by Haseena Nishad, the firm's chief executive officer, went viral on social media. It shows founder Nishad Hussain handing phones to the employees who had picked boxes containing chocolate, ensuring no participant missed out on the top prize. The CEO explained that the initiative recognised employees' hard work and contributions, noting that some staff have been with the firm since its founding and most for more than five years.
For HR and reward professionals, the episode raises a familiar set of questions about high-value, tangible gifts as a recognition tool: how such gestures fit within a broader retention strategy, how they land across a workforce, and whether spectacle translates into sustained engagement. World Star Holding frames its approach in exactly those terms.
Nishad said employee welfare and retention have been the firm's top priorities since the beginning, and described the giveaway as part of an effort to strengthen team cohesion and foster long-term loyalty. She added that the approach aims to keep employees happy and closely connected to the organisation, and credited gestures such as these with helping the firm retain talent over the long term.
The iPhone giveaway is not an isolated stunt. It is the latest in a series of similar events by World Star Holding that mix reward, recognition and shared experience.
In 2024, to mark International Workers' Day, the firm gave 16 employees stays at five-star hotels, rides in supercars with private drivers and yacht parties. In 2023, it held a special movie screening for staff. The company also runs an annual sports day that splits employees into four teams, and it sets aside a monthly budget for sports training intended to maintain what it describes as a healthy and competitive spirit across the workforce.
Taken together, the programme points to a recognition strategy built on recurring, visible events rather than one-off perks. The firm pairs high-value individual rewards — smartphones, hotel stays, yacht parties — with collective activities such as the sports day and movie screening, alongside an ongoing monthly investment in employee wellbeing through sport.
The longevity data the CEO cited — some employees with the firm since its founding, most for more than five years — is the kind of tenure evidence HR leaders typically look for when weighing whether recognition spending correlates with retention outcomes. World Star Holding's leadership explicitly links the two, pointing to gestures like the iPhone game as a factor in holding onto talent.
Employers considering comparable schemes will face practical questions the viral video does not answer: budget cycles, tax treatment of high-value gifts in the relevant jurisdiction, and how to keep recognition equitable when prizes vary, even briefly, between employees. In this case, the CEO's decision to give phones to those who had drawn chocolate removed the gap between winners and non-winners within minutes of the game ending.
The episode also illustrates how recognition events now travel beyond the workplace. Because the CEO shared the video on social media, the giveaway functions simultaneously as an internal morale exercise and an external employer-brand signal — a dual purpose more reward teams are building into their programmes as candidate research increasingly happens on public platforms.
World Star Holding has signaled it intends to keep the momentum going, with the iPhone event joining an annual calendar that already includes the workers' day rewards, the sports day and the monthly sports training budget.
