The Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce honored five employee resource group leaders on November 4, 2026, capping its annual LGBTQ+ Workplace Alliance Summit at Amegy Tower in Houston.

The recognized ERG leaders span some of the region's largest employers: Jay Ferguson of CenterPoint Energy, Julie Lara of H-E-B, Luis Nacianceno of Cheniere, Christopher Stafford of ExxonMobil and Dr. Rick Ward-Harder of Dignity Memorial. The awards put a spotlight on the people who run internal inclusion programs at energy, grocery and services companies that together employ tens of thousands across the Houston area.

What happened at the summit?

The summit ran under the theme "The Authentic Advantage: Leading with the Power of Your Own Brand." Business leaders, corporate professionals and workplace inclusion advocates attended the daylong event.

Lisa Trapani Shumate, founder of Maximum Q, delivered the keynote address. A panel on identity and leadership featured three speakers from different sectors: KHOU 11 journalist Carlos Hernandez, Lovett Group's Kirby Liu and PNC Bank's JP Ramirez.

Chamber co-founder and CEO Tammi Wallace delivered the closing remarks, wrapping a program built around personal branding and authentic leadership at work.

Why do the ERG awards matter for employers?

The five honorees point to where large Houston employers are investing in employee resource groups. CenterPoint Energy, H-E-B, Cheniere, ExxonMobil and Dignity Memorial all field active LGBTQ+ ERGs, and each nominated or supported a leader recognized at the summit.

For HR teams, that lineup is a signal. ERG leadership has become a visible, chamber-recognized role inside these companies, spanning utilities, retail groceries, liquefied natural gas, oil and gas, and funeral and memorial services. The honorees were:

  • Jay Ferguson — CenterPoint Energy
  • Julie Lara — H-E-B
  • Luis Nacianceno — Cheniere
  • Christopher Stafford — ExxonMobil
  • Dr. Rick Ward-Harder — Dignity Memorial

The recognition also gives employers a benchmark. Companies asking whether their own ERG programs are mature enough to compete for talent in Houston can look at this roster of employers with recognized, active leadership in place.

What's the bigger picture?

The summit itself is now an annual fixture for the chamber, drawing corporate professionals alongside advocates. Its 2026 program leaned heavily on the idea that individual authenticity — "the power of your own brand" — drives leadership outcomes, a framing that speakers tied directly to workplace identity.

The panel format mixed media, consulting and banking perspectives, with Hernandez (KHOU 11), Liu (Lovett Group) and Ramirez (PNC Bank) discussing how identity shapes their leadership. Ramirez's presence also connects the event to a major national bank's regional presence, underlining how large financial institutions participate in Houston's LGBTQ+ business community.

Chamber CEO Tammi Wallace, who co-founded the organization, closed the day — a reminder that the business group itself drives the employer engagement agenda.

For HR and people leaders, the takeaway is straightforward: LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion programming in Houston remains active, employer-backed and publicly celebrated, with named leaders at five major companies now on the record for 2026. Expect next year's summit to build on the same employer network as companies weigh how visible their inclusion programs stay.

"The Authentic Advantage" theme suggests the chamber will keep pressing the link between personal identity and professional leadership — a conversation HR teams will hear again as they plan 2027 programming.
